Benchmark Methodology
We tested £10-£20/mo VPS plans across Hostingowy, DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr, and OVHcloud. Each test ran 5 times on a fresh instance during UK peak hours (2-4 PM GMT).
CPU Performance (Geekbench 6)
Hostingowy's bare-metal backed KVM instances showed 15-25% higher single-core performance compared to cloud providers. Multi-core scores were even more pronounced due to dedicated CPU cores (no hypervisor contention).
Disk I/O (fio — 4K Random Read/Write)
NVMe-backed instances outperformed cloud SSDs by 3-5x in random I/O. Hostingowy's ZFS with ARC caching delivered consistent sub-millisecond latency, while cloud providers showed higher variance during peak hours.
Network Performance
UK-to-UK latency was lowest on Hostingowy (2-4ms average) due to direct peering in European data centres. Cloud providers routed traffic through their central gateways, adding 5-15ms of latency.
Price-to-Performance Ratio
When normalising for performance, Hostingowy delivered 40-60% better value than cloud alternatives. The savings come from eliminating cloud overhead and using bare-metal infrastructure efficiently.
